PREVENTION

The goal of this unit is to preclude or reduce the negative impact of drug and alcohol abuse on the individual, family and the community at large.


Prevention programming, both School & Community based, is available to any interested schools, community groups, religious groups, community coalitions or employers in the Carbon, Monroe and Pike county areas. The Commission provides ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs) alternative activities, community education, prevention/gambling program marketing along with environmental prevention strategies for communities in our three county area.

School Based Services include:

  • Drug & Alcohol Policy and Curriculum Development;
  • Student Assistance Program (SAP) Team Support;
  • Drug & Alcohol Pre-screening for further referral needs
  • Individual and Group Education and Inte
  • Teacher In-Services for Drug & Alcohol Education and Awareness; and
  • Children Of Substance Abusers Programming (COSA).


Evidence-Based Programming includes:

  • Stacked Deck – program to prevent problem gambling; curriculum for grades 9-12
  • Strengthening Families Program – family skills training program with a focus on reducing problem behaviors and delinquency as well as alcohol and drug abuse. Additional goals are improved school performance, social competency and strengthening of family bonds; for ages 10-14 and their parents
  • Too Good For Drugs – program designed to reduce risk and increase protective factors for youth in grades K-8 and 9-12

 

State Approved Programs include:

  • Beginning Alcohol and Addiction Basic Education Studies (BABES) – primary prevention program for grades K-4 designed to give children a lifetime of protection from substance abuse. By assisting young people to develop positive living skills and by providing them with accurate, non-judgmental information about the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs they receive decision-making skills they can use for life
  • NIDA Brain Power – program that takes students grades 2-5 on an age-appropriate exploration of the science behind drug abuse, explaining the effects of drugs on the brain and body
  • NIDA Mind Over Matter – program invites young teens in grades 5-9 to take a scientific journey to learn about the brain’s complex responses to specific drugs, including cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, marijuana, nicotine, opiates, prescription drugs and steroids
  • Student Assistance Program (SAP) Services – provided to participating school districts as mandated by the Department of Education. Services include team planning, intervention/recommendation and support/follow-up. Assistance with full drug and alcohol assessment provided after initial screening is completed. Also, core team and parent meetings, student consultations and specific target group facilitation is available
  • Kids Don’t Gamble…Wanna Bet? – program on gambling awareness for students grades 3-5 and 6-8
  • We Know BETter – interactive program focusing on the concepts of addiction, primarily gambling, for students grades 4-6 and 7-9. This program meets the state and common core standards
  • State Approved Strategies include:
  • Gambling Away the Golden Years - a single education event for Senior citizens related to gambling and the effects it can have on individuals and families in their golden years
  • Gambling PAYS Administration and Support – provided to participating school districts who take part in the Pennsylvania Youth Survey. This extensive ATOD survey takes place every two years. Assistance provided to interpret data, plan activities and monitor progress as well as addressing the risk and protective factors identified in the survey
  • Prescription Drug Take Back Strategies/Events – assisting local groups with securing law enforcement to provide a medication take back event
